Owned by the Castéja family, Trottevieille has one parcel of some of the oldest vines in St.-Emilion. Dense purple, the 2005 is better at age 10 then earlier. The wine has beautiful blueberry, plum and blackcurrant fruit, an attractive underlying minerality, medium to full body, sweet tannin, and a long, layered, complex finish. Drink it over the next 15-20 years. Drink 2015 - 2035.
I have always admired the 2005 Trottevieille, perhaps the first vintage that really fulfilled the potential of this great Saint Emilion. It has great clarity on the nose with crisp black fruit, a hint of charcoal and smoke. The palate is nicely balanced with grippy tannins but plenty of ravishing ripe red berry fruit to back it up, hints of cedar beginning to emerge on the finish. Very fine. Tasted December 2012.
Saline smack and a grippy slate texture from the first moments, this majors on extreme limestone signature, and took its time to soften. Today you'll find a juicy, powerful, beautifully balanced wine with silky tannins, black cherry and blackberry fruit, waves of orange peel, coffee and soft leather, hitting it out of the park. Great vintage character, will age for decades from now, love it. 100% new oak.
Tasted blind. Not much nose. Round and flinty and interesting on the nose but decidedly dry on the end still. 14%
Drink 2015-2025
Good ruby-red. Sexy, spicy, slightly high-toned aromas of currant and dark chocolate. Sweet, lush and suave, offering excellent mouth coverage and conveying a strong impression of extract. Finishes impressively long, with firm tannins buried in fruit.
Philippe Casteja has turned in a terrific effort as the 2005 is the finest Trottevieille I have ever tasted. It boasts a deep blue/black color as well as a beautiful perfume of creme de cassis, asphalt, truffles, and pain grille, stunning richness, fresh, lively acidity, sweet tannin, and a long, full-bodied finish. This outstanding St.-Emilion should be drinkable in 4-5 years, and keep for two decades or more.
Kudos to proprietor Philippe Casteja, who has produced the finest Trottevieille I have tasted. A blockbuster effort, the 2005 boasts an inky/blue/purple color along with aromas of creme de cassis, blackberries, truffles, fruitcake, and toasty oak. Pure and full-bodied with significant extract, tannin, acidity, and alcohol, this stunning wine should be very long lived. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2030+.
Rich, sweet chocolate nose. Very integrated and lively. At last there is the refreshment factor here
