Dark ruby/garnet, this delicious, elegant, classic 2008 is not the biggest or brawniest wine of the vintage, but it is a typical Bordeaux offering plenty of red and black currant fruit intermixed with licorice, cedar and spice box characteristics. Enjoy it over the next 4-5 years.
This project, which offers promising wines at more realistic prices, is the brainchild of Cos d'Estournel's proprietor, Michel Reybier, and his brilliant winemaker, Jean-Guillaume Prats. A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, the wine spends 5 months on its lees, and is aged in a combination of new and once-used oak. While the 2008 is not quite up to the level of the 2005, it exhibits sweet ripe blackberry fruit along with hints of tar and forest floor. Elegant as well as rich, broad, and flavorful, with sweet tannins and fresh acids, it should drink well for 7-8 years.
