An unctuously-textured effort with aromas and flavours of honeysuckle, peach, white currants, and quince. Rich, with low acidity, and a forward, low acid, super-concentrated character, it is unbelievably delicious, and should remain so for another 1-2 years before it closes down. What re-emerges at age ten or twelve should be fascinating, but seems less of a sure bet for long-term aging than the 1998 and 1999.
As for the 1997 Hermitage blanc, it is an extremely rich, thickly textured, honeyed wine with notes of flowers, fino sherry, honeysuckle, and butter. Its full-bodied power and concentation should ensure two decades or more of longevity. Interestingly, in both vintages Chave's white Hermitage achieved 14% or more natural alcohol. 93pts.
