The 2009 Coddington Chardonnay displays expressive notes of pineapple, pink guava, peach kernels and warmed pear slices with hints of cashews, marmite on toast and oyster shells. Medium bodied and with a pleasant touch of viscosity, it gives great concentration, lively acidity and a long savory finish. Approachable now, it should drink to 2017+.

Rich ripe fruit the nose has depth and sweetness the palate is full of ripe melon and greengage.
There is mid balance a mix of apple and lime stylish and elegant yet the back palate has fruit

This wine's soft, supple texture lures you in, but the aromatics and subtle, elegant notes extend all the way to the lingering finish. Peach, apricot nectar and baked apple flavors mingle with nutmeg, mineral, cedar and fig paste details, as a fresh acidity keeps all the notes vibrant. Drink now through 2018. 950 cases made.
Chardonnay is another strength among the country's whites, though the category tends to be dominated by perennial superstar Kumeu River. This year there are four outstanding Chardonnays from this North Island estate on the outskirts of Auckland, including this report's highest-scoring white, the Kumeu Coddington 2009 (94).
Dusty, liquid mineral nose melting into lemon and lime cordial and hard lime candy. Fine wet chalk and lemon fruit intensity and a peach pastille depth.
Very fine and expressive crystalline fruits nose, showing some honeysuckle but also pear, spice and minerals. The palate has nice pear and spice with a mineral core. Very stylish and focused.
Very tense and still in great shape. Really fine and complete and zappy. Long. Drink 2013-2019.
Vineyard faces north and is sheltered. Both fragrant and smoky. Gentle toast and a mealy note. Delicate stone fruit and citrus and orange flavours hide the power. Copes with higher toast and 25% new oak (Claude Gillet). Rich on the palate. Intense but still fresh and has a certain sweetness on the finish. Touch of botrytis in this vineyard, apparently. Lots of caramel and dried citrus peel here, the palate atypically broad for Kumeu River. But the wine is polished and has good length. Drink now. Screw cap.
Tasted blind at Farr Vintners Kumeu/White Burgundy tasting. The 2009 Coddington Chardonnay from Kumeu River is very refined on the nose with dried white peach, desiccated pineapple and a touch of chalk that all gain intensity in the glass. The palate is fresh and crisp with a taut line of acidity, but plenty of peach and greengage toward the concentrated finish that fans out in convincing fashion. This is an excellent Chardonnay that is going strong. Drink: 2015 - 2022
The Brajkovich family has been making world-class Chardonnays for decades about an hour from Auckland. It was the first stop on my trip. This white shows wonderful aromas of peaches and apricots with lemon and sliced apples. It's full-bodied and powerful with a great finish and texture. Goes on for minutes. Screw cap.
