An Epic Offer on One of Barolo's Finest - VIETTI

Vietti is one of Italy’s most prestigious and historic properties and has quickly become one of the great names of the wine world. Under the stewardship of Alfredo Currado and Luciana Vietti, the property pioneered single-vineyard Barolo bottlings and was one of the first producers to proactively promote their own wines and those of Piedmont abroad.

Vietti’s ascent to an iconic status of a similar level as that of Giacomo Conterno and Bruno Giacosa has meant that their wines have become increasingly difficult to buy. Prices have gone up yet they still represent relative value for money when compared to the aforementioned pair of Piedmontese producers and other big names from across the world.

They make a total of 17 wines from their base in Castiglione Falletto but today’s offer focusses on just the Barolos. Each of these wines is very individual and extremely representative of its vineyard and terroir. To help you choose the right wine for your own taste, a brief summary of each wine, vineyard and vintage can be found below along with an abridged tasting note from a major critic. If you’re still at a loss, then please do contact your account manager who will be able to guide you through the wines.

We have spent many months compiling such a comprehensive offer but, even then, volumes are still very limited and so these are offered on a first come, first served basis.

Barolo Castiglione

A blend of wine from Castiglione Falletto, Monforte, Barolo and Novello.

Made from a selection of grapes from several areas within the region, Castiglione is Vietti’s entry level Barolo. Thanks to vine age between 7 and 35 years, there is a surprising level of complexity and depth to this cuvée, given its entry level status and low price point. Galloni says that it “…may very well be the single most compelling value in Barolo today.”

Barolo Rocche di Castiglione (Castiglione Falletto)

A single vineyard of which 1 of the 16 hectares belongs to Vietti, Rocche is widely regarded as one of the most profound sites in Barolo and one of Vietti’s finest wines. The 60 year old vines on very steep hillsides and rare soil composition have created wines of incredible complexity, finesse AND richness – a rare combination.

Barolo Lazzarito (Serralunga d’Alba)

Located immediately north of the town of Serralunga d’Alba, Lazzarito is a vineyard which has seen its boundaries controversially augmented over recent years. The amphitheatre shaped nucleus, where Vietti’s 2 hectares sit, is the true essence of this great cru, known for its rich, pure, ripe fruit and accessible structure and freshness.

Barolo Ravera (Novello)

Ravera is a large vineyard by Barolo standards and Vietti’s 3 hectares are in a prime location on some of the best soils. These wines are complex and powerful and normally quite hard in youth. Winemaker Luca Currado describes them as “…like a young man with lots of muscles in a too-tight jacket…” but, in 2012, the open, more forward nature of the vintage means that this is actually quite approachable yet will last.

Barolo Brunate (La Morra)

Brunate is one of the great names of the region and can lay a claim to being Barolo’s greatest site. As a rule, Brunate produces wines that are very classically structured with a staggering level of complexity. Those from the La Morra side, where Vietti’s small slither of vines sit, tend to be a little plusher thanks to a sweetness of fruit which is often missing in wines from the Barolo side. In short, Brunate represents some of the best Barolo money can buy and some of Vietti’s finest wines.

Barolo Riserva Villero (Castiglione Falletto)

Villero is a vineyard where, as in Burgundy, the higher up the slope your vines are, the better. Vietti’s blocks are in the north eastern parts, as high up the slope as the vines go. The style here tends to be dark, broody and powerful which makes it a perfect candidate for ageing and the ideal wine for a Riserva. This riserva is not made in every vintage and each release has a different label, designed by an artist of Vietti’s choosing.
