The Absolutely Stunning 2015s from Craggy Range

We welcomed Craggy Range winemaker Matt Stafford to the Farr Vintners office recently. He was in London to show Craggy’s new vintage - the 2015s. Since we started working with Craggy Range over ten years ago, we have seen the quality level increase exponentially. The 2015s are absolutely stunning. It is an interesting year as it has the opulence of the great 2013 vintage but also the structure and control of the more ‘old world’ 2014. So arguably the perfect combination!

The three wines on offer today are the top end of the Craggy Range stable. Sophia is a Merlot-dominated wine that has wonderful aromatics and underlying power and elegance. Kiwi Master of Wine Bob Campbell gave this wine a whopping 97 points. Prominent UK wine journalist and a consistent champion of Australian and New Zealand wines, Matthew Jukes, gave it an equally impressive 18+ score. Le Sol is a Syrah that often reminds us of a Côte-Rôtie from a top producer. That has never been more true than in 2015. It is a serious wine with bags of complexity and Bob Campbell and Matthew Jukes agree, giving it 98 and 18.5+ points respectively. Aroha Pinot Noir is a relatively new venture for the winery but it has arguably seen the fastest increase in quality. This has opulence, texture but also acidity and balance. It received the same scores as Le Sol from the two critics - 98 and 18.5+ points.

Sadly for us, as Craggy’s star has risen, their distribution has broadened and therefore our allocation has dwindled. We now only receive a small volume of 6 bottle cases so act quickly before they’re gone forever!

"A super-smooth blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc with dense, complex mixed red berries, blackcurrant, floral, violet, anise, spice, cedar, new leather and nutty oak flavours. A powerful wine that’s impressive now but shows obvious cellaring potential. Drink 2017-2025.”

97 points, Bob Campbell MW

"Bitter tannins and sour plum notes abound in this wine. The blend is 73% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Cabernet Franc. Apparently, there was some scarring on the Cabernet Sauvignon but there are no burnt notes or overt astringency in the wine. The sour theme is rather enticing and refreshing and it lifts the finish. The heat, later in the season, gives it a crunchiness to the tannins which is rather exciting and savoury. This is a very interesting wine and it is worthy of five years of cellaring before you open it.”

18+ points, Matthew Jukes

"Supremely elegant syrah with floral, violet, black and white pepper, dark berry, chocolate, liquorice and mixed spice flavours. A fine-grained wine, with a backbone of ripe tannins that suggests potential without being a barrier to enjoyment right now. Beautifully layered with a complex array of flavours and lifted aromatics. Drink 2017-2027.”

98 points, Bob Campbell MW

“Spicy and meaty Syrah and because the heat came later in the season (in January) the shape of this wine is a little different to previous vintages. Alcohol is 13.5% with narrower shoulders and a more focussed, punchy, peppery which I really like. This is a slightly more reticent and more discreet wine than normal, but I like its gentleness and calm.“

18.5+ points, Matthew Jukes

"Dense, rich pinot noir with sweet plum, dark berry, floral, violet, spice, anise and nutty oak flavours. Intense, flavoursome wine that is deliciously accessible now but has a promising future. The wine has a perfect balance of fruit sweetness and ripe tannins. It is long and layered with impressive complexity. Drink 2017-2023.”

98 points, Bob Campbell MW

“The vineyard suffered from only 50% fruit set – this has certainly concentrated the wine! Very pure, precise and vital the nose is lush and sonorous and there is a nice whole bunch element shining through (50%). Red-fruited and cherry-driven, with superb gloss and slipperiness, this is a superb, classy wine with a brightly acidic finish and some decent oak backing it up (30% new oak). There is toastiness on the back palate which is cunningly offset with the crispness of the stems. Very sexy and curvaceous but not at all heavy this is another great Aroha.“

18.5+ points, Matthew Jukes
