Two Great Vintages of a Classic Château's Second Wine

There is no doubt that 2009 and 2010 are truly great years for the wines of Bordeaux. Those with long memories frequently compare them to the classic vintages of 1959 and 1961. There is also no doubt in our minds that the second growth Château Rauzan Ségla in Margaux is producing truly outstanding grand vins that are the finest of the appellation after their mega-priced neighbours Châteaux Margaux and Palmer.

However, one of the most impressive achievements at this Chanel-owned property is their gorgeous second wine, Ségla. Such is the ruthless pursuit of quality here these days that more of the vineyard’s fruit goes into the second wine than the first wine! This means that the quality of Ségla is invariably at the level of the first wines of many classed growths. A bold claim, but one that blind tastings have confirmed to us many times over. In fact, we would go so far as to say that Ségla is one of the very finest second wines of the whole of the Médoc and it is often close in quality to Pavillon Rouge de Margaux – a wine that sells at around seven times the price.

Customers looking for a great vintage of Ségla that is ready to drink will love the 2009 vintage which is fleshy, ripe and opulent yet well balanced. For those looking for a bit more structure, or for a wine to lay down for a few more years, we would recommend the 2010. Whichever vintage you buy (and we’d suggest one of each!) we are convinced that you will not find a better Margaux at a lower price from these two great vintages.

“Deep ruby colour. The nose is ripe with black cherry and a little blackcurrant, but also showing hints of sweet spice from new oak, dried flowers, and slight cedar development. Enticing and complex. The palate is smooth, ripe and round with the tannins melted into the wine. Ripe black cherry, violets and hints of cassis are layered with nutmeg and cedar on a long finish. Super silky with no hard edges."

"Black cherry and fresh mushroom, with hints of currants and sweet tobacco. Full- bodied, with chewy, yet polished tannins. Lovely berry and cherry. Racy and pretty. So delicious now. Second wine of Rauzan-Segla. Try in 2016."

“A deep ruby colour, with an immediately expressive, vibrant and very youthful nose, this is still all primary blueberry and fresh violet. The palate seems silkier that under cork, with the fruits dominating the palate in notes of summer pudding and fresh cherry. Juicy, plump and round, the structure comes at the back end, tightening up the glossy texture of this wine. While this has the power of fruit, it hasn't yet developed the savoury, earthy complexity that can be seen under cork."

“Extremely attractive aromas of currants, raspberries and blueberries follow through to a full body with silky tannins, and a beautiful balance and fruit, tannin and acidity harmony. Wonderful second wine from Rauzan-Segla. Try in 2017."
