The Spectacular 2016 Vintage From Craggy Range

We recently had the pleasure of tasting Craggy Range’s 2016 vintage and we are privileged to be the first UK wine merchant to offer their three Prestige wines – Aroha, Le Sol and Sophia.

Aroha (which means love in Maori) is a Pinot Noir from their Te Muna Road vineyard in Martinborough. Bob Campbell MW, arguably the world's leading authority on New Zealand's wines, awards it 96 points and describes it as “rich, concentrated, mouth-filling… a seductively-textured, almost sumptuous wine”.

Le Sol is a Syrah from the renowned Gimblett Gravels region of Hawkes Bay. The vines are located in the stoniest parts of the vineyard and are a heritage clone of Syrah brought to New Zealand in the 1840s. Bob Campbell MW praises it for being a “nicely perfumed and typically dense, rich syrah” and gives it a huge 98 points.

Sophia is a Merlot dominated Bordeaux style blend, described as “plump, fleshy but structured wine, with vibrant acidity and tannins” by Bob, who gives it 95 points. This wine also hails from the Gimblett Gravels region.

Since we first started selling Craggy Range’s wines well over a decade ago, we have seen the quality go from strength to strength and the global demand for these impressive wines has never been as high as it is today.

Sadly for us, as Craggy’s star has risen, their distribution has broadened and therefore our allocation has dwindled. We now only receive a small volume of 6 bottle cases and a tiny number of magnums, so act quickly before they’re gone forever!

Minimum Order – 6 bottles or 3 magnums

“Le Sol, one of the country's most respected syrah labels, cracked through the NZD $100 barrier with the 2013 vintage and has continued to adjust the price in a northerly direction. This is the first vintage that a small amount (20%) of whole bunches has been used in the fermentation. Nicely perfumed and typically dense, rich syrah with a lovely texture and firm, rounded tannins. Powerful yet elegant wine with plum, berry and mixed spice flavours together with an interesting savoury edge."

98 points, Bob Campbell MW

“Just 700 six packs were made of this wine in 2016, which now sees a reduced 35% new oak. A bright violet colour in the glass, this has great vivacity on the nose with blueberry, black pepper and floral cherry blossom. The spice here is subtle and integrated. The palate is glossy and extremely refined, with very fine tannins lining pure blue and black fruits. There is great vibrancy that comes in waves of bright acidity, which accents the peppery, spicy Syrah character in the wine. The finish is long, with just a touch of exotic star anise adding weight to the fruit."

“A blend of Merlot (58%), Cabernet Franc (23%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (19%). Plump, fleshy but structured wine, with vibrant acidity and tannins balancing fruit and alcohol sweetness. A weighty, textural wine with plum, subtle floral, liquorice, wood smoke and anise flavours."

95 points, Bob Campbell MW

“A blend of 58% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc and 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, this deeply coloured wine is minty, plummy and chocolatey on the nose. The palate is chock full of juicy plums, which give a roundness and soften the chalky tannins. There is more acidity here than in previous vintages and that gives good lift and balance. Toasty, spicy notes marry with the black fruits on a long and lingering finish."

“Rich, concentrated, mouth-filling pinot noir in a ripe style with dark-fleshed plum, dark berry, spicy oak, liquorice, a hint of violet and subtle Christmas cake and dried fruit characters. A seductively-textured, almost sumptuous wine."

96 points, Bob Campbell MW

“Now made with 50% whole cluster, the 2016 is juicy and ripe on the nose, with a mixture of red and black fruits and exotic nutmeg and clove. The palate is plush, round and polished, with pure black cherry, and dark hedgerow fruits. This is glossy and very pure, with silky and refined tannins. There are notes of spicy, toasty oak on a long finish that is redolent yet cut with bright acidity."
