The Genesis of a Great Gran Reserva
We are very pleased to offer the inaugural vintage of Spain's newest gem - La Rioja Alta's 2012 Viña Arana Gran Reserva. As you will know, La Rioja Alta is one of Spain's great producers and this wine is the start of an exciting new chapter in their illustrious history.
An extremely reasonable £27 per bottle in bond (£35 inc. taxes) gets you a wine that has undergone rigorous selection in the vineyard (from 47 year old vines) as well as six years' maturation - three in oak and three in bottle. In case you need further affirmation, Neal Martin says this of La Rioja Alta: “Quite simply, these are some of the finest Riojas that can grace your cellar: complex, refined, classic but without compromising fruit intensity and to reiterate: wines that speak about where they come from.”
In short, a huge amount of care, effort and expertise has gone into every bottle - this is a lot of wine for your money.
Although it doesn't (yet) have tasting notes from the usual critics, it does have our endorsement, having tasted it last week. It is an exciting expression of Tempranillo that is delicious now yet has the complexity one would expect from a Gran Reserva that will allow considerable ageing. When you consider how highly regarded La Rioja Alta's other wines are, this is sure to be well received.
It will only be made in the very best vintages and this is an opportunity to be there at the very start of this wine's exciting journey.

“Medium-deep garnet in colour, this Gran Reserva exudes the most desirable aromas of traditional Rioja - leather, sweet spices, desiccated cherries and ripe black fruits. The palate follows in this vein, with a rich core of sweet cherry and kirsch subsumed by savoury spices, leather and even a hint of coconut. The tannins are soft, melted into the fruit to give a cashmere texture and plump generosity through the mid palate. The finish is long and complex, offering sweet and savoury in equal measure. Drink now until 2035+. 13.5%."
16.5+ points, Thomas Parker MW, Farr Vintners
“Dark-cherry red with a garnet-red rim. High aromatic intensity, with outstanding notes of ripe red fruit, red berries, wild strawberries and plum jam, leading to tertiary aromas from meticulous aging in oak: vanilla, cedar, tobacco, coffee, caramel and sweet patisserie notes. In the mouth, its initial freshness and structure, typical of this brand, predominate. Balanced, with soft, flavoursome tannins. Elegant, complex finish, where the ripe red fruit and balsamic notes provide a splendid end."
