Neal Martin is regarded as the leading British critic of Bordeaux wines. Chosen by Robert Parker to be his successor at The Wine Advocate, he moved to Vinous.com in 2017 and is the author of “Pomerol” - the definitive guide to the wines and châteaux of this famous appellation. Neal is a long-standing member of the “Southwold Group” and his annual pronouncement on the latest Bordeaux vintage is always keenly awaited by claret lovers around the world.
He has just published his report on the very good Bordeaux 2018 vintage. It is no surprise that right bank superstars like Pétrus (98 points), Lafleur (97 points) and Cheval Blanc (96 points) are highly praised but perhaps the biggest shock is an amazing 93 point rating for a little-known Lalande de Pomerol - Château Sergant. This is an incredible feat for a wine that we are pleased to offer today at just £12 per bottle (£144 per dozen) in bond.
We tasted the wine ourselves on Friday and were impressed by its depth and plushness, with ripe, soft tannins and complex spiciness. This is a real crowd-pleaser that is already delicious and which will give great pleasure for many years. A real bargain from Bordeaux and one that is destined to sell rapidly.

The 2018 Sergant, which impressed from barrel, has a captivating bouquet of precise black cherry, wild strawberry and rose petal aromas that waft from the glass. The palate is well balanced with fine-grained tannins, a silky-smooth texture and beautifully integrated oak toward the finish. This is a top-quality Lalande de Pomerol, a bit of a hidden gem. This Lalande de Pomerol is made from 30 year old vines – mainly Merlot with some Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. On the nose there are exotic notes of Asian Spices, smoke and vanilla. The palate is plush, plump and creamy with soft, ripe tannins and a cashmere mouthfeel. Hedonistic and forward in style, this will provide sumptuous early drinking pleasure. A voluptuous and forward right bank Bordeaux at a bargain price.
