Tasting Notes

A wine for patient connoisseurs and long-term cellaring is the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Auguste Favier. A blend of 85% Grenache and 15% old vine Cinsault, half is aged in cement tanks, and the rest in 2- to 3-year-old 600-liter demi-muids. This inky/blue/purple-tinged 2007 offers up aromas of graphite, camphor, incense, blueberries, and black fruits. Full-bodied, young and unevolved, with massive depth, great concentration, and super purity, texture, and length, it requires 2-4 years of cellaring, and should easily age for two decades or more.

Score: 96Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (185), October 2009

The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Auguste Favier (81.2% Grenache, 15% very old vine Cinsault, and the rest Syrah, half of it aged in cement tanks and blended with the other half aged in three-year-old, 600-liter demi-muids) is another exhilarating wine. Blue/purple to the rim, with notes of camphor, incense, blueberries, licorice, spring flowers, and copious fruits of assorted red and black colors, the wine is broad, full-bodied, with superb purity, good freshness, and stunning length and texture. This gorgeous wine should age nicely for up to two decades

Score: 93/95Robert Parker, (179), October 2008

Also rock-star stuff, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Auguste Favier gives up plenty of sweet blackberry, sugar cured meats, licorice, toasted spice and butcher shop-like aromas and flavors to go with a full-bodied, sweetly-fruited, fabulously dense and layered palate. As with the Colombis, it’s a big, rich wine that stays fresh and pure.

Score: 96Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate (214), August 2014

Glass-staining ruby. Strikingly complex, scents of blackcurrant, graphite, incense and potpourri. Cherry-cola and dark berry compote flavors saturate the palate, picking up exotic notes of lavender and rose with air. The bright, gently sweet finish is dominated by zesty minerals. Offers impressive balance and clarity.

Score: 92/95Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, January 2009
