Tasting Notes

86
Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book (4), December 2003

This well-made Cru Bourgeois exhibits a dark ruby color, and a round, attractive nose of black currants, raspberries, and earth. Medium-bodied, with sweet tannin and good purity, this wine should drink well for a decade

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (122), April 1999

A return to a more typical style after their loosely knit, commercial, soft, and flabby 1995, Phelan-Segur's 1996 displays a deep ruby/purple color, and an excellent bouquet of raspberry/cassis fruit intermixed with smoke and earth. Medium-bodied, with admirable richness and definition, this wine possesses moderate tannin, impressive purity, and fine texture and length. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2012.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (115), February 1998

After a surprisingly light, feeble 1995, Phelan-Segur has rebounded with a gutsy, classic St.-Estephe with a saturated purple color, plenty of sweet, weedy, cassis fruit with high quality new oak in the background, good body, a chewy texture, and the vintage's high tannin well-displayed. This well-endowed wine requires 5-6 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2012.
