A fragrant, floral pinot that is a blend of the Calvert and Northburn Station Vineyards in Central Otago. Notes of sappy and stone-flecked red-cherry fruits with spicy and smoky complexity; the palate is succulently ripe and has a handy freshness. Long-layered tannins abound with plenty of juicy plum and dark-cherry flavors. Drink now.

This is the first vintage of Cloudy Bay Te Wahi produced from their own vineyards in Central Otago - Calvert and Northburn. The resulting increase in quality is evident. This has a relatively deep ruby colour for Pinot Noir, typical of Central Otago. The nose is ripe with black cherry, garrigue and peppery smoke from the new oak. The palate is broad with black fruits and violets supported by silky, ripe, refined tannins. These are bolstered on the mid-palate by savoury spices and toast, building to a long finish of ripe black plums and crushed black pepper. An impressive and very well-balanced wine.

Vibrant and much more muscular than the Marlborough Pinots from this address. Vegy and solid. Lots to get your teeth into – very different from Marlborough. Light sweetness. No need to build structure into this!

Cloudy Bay have been making Pinot from Central Otago fruit since 2010, trucking it back to their winery in Malborough for vinification. This is from several sites, including Calvert and Northburn, the latter recently purchased. Deep cherry. Peppery and alive and it has a note of wild thyme (a characteristic winemaker Jim White picked out as typical of Central Otago Pinot Noir), gently herbal but not at all herbaceous. Lovely freshness, full of fresh, red fruit, more strawberry and raspberry as it opens up, and super-silky. Subtle and long.
