Sancerre Silex Galinot, Gitton Pere et Fils 2015

Tasting Notes

These fantastic wines from Gitton from the rare Sauvignon Jaune planted in 1959 are raised for 9-11 months in 600 litre oak. The Silex site offers unique, textural wines from a masterful winemaker. The 2015 has a generous nose that shows hints of lemon curd, marmalade, and white pear. It is expressive, expansive, honeyed and rich. The palate follows, with real viscosity and weight bringing powerful candied citrus and poached pear, hints of vanilla and cinnamon, and just a touch of smoke. This atypical Sancerre is magnificent, with the zip and tang of acidity reigning in all the luscious ripeness and power. This feels almost like a Grand Cru Pinot Gris from Alsace, yet with lower alcohol and tauter acidity that brings a mineral tang. Moreish, intriguing and outstanding.
