Tasting Notes

Tasted blind. Mid ruby colour. Floral, quite high toned and laced with nutmeg. A gently worked wine, with charming blueberry and red-berry fruit at the core. Positively zesty acidity cuts through everything, but the tannins are delicate and fine. This is a lively, brisk example. Approachable already.

Really perfumed with blackcurrants and blueberries. Flowers and cookies. Medium to full body, round and creamy tannins and a flavorful finish. Slightly austere from the tannins at the end, but a solid red for the vintage. Better to drink after 2022.

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, January 2020

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Quintus is a little reticent to begin, revealing delicate notes of kirsch, dried mulberries, and black raspberries before launching into a core of baked plums and licorice, plus a hint of underbrush. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is elegantly styled and refreshing, with bags of bright red and black fruits and fine-grained tannins, finishing with a skip in its step. 2024-2040

This is rather attractively marked by Cabernet Franc, the highest levels since 2011, showing floral aromatics that play along the palate. Insisting, grippy tannins make their presence felt without being drying, and there's a lovely minerally, slatey, salty tang on the finish which emphasises the purity of the red fruits. This is a very good Quintus, elegant and with less concentration than in recent years, but highly enjoyable. Harvested 14-29 September.

There's a light floral note here, sweetly aromatic. Lifted, pure dark fruit with an aroma of graphite giving a mineral character. Juicy, mouth-watering and scented on the palate but could do with a little more flesh in the middle to balance that freshness.

With more amplitude, more depth, more spice and more oak than the second wine, Dragon, this wine could have ended up being a little too powerful and hard, but quite the opposite has happened. The nose is very detailed with juicy black cherry and plum notes over a clean, rich palate with lovely freshness and touches of spice. The finish is juicy and mouth-watering and it rolls on for minutes and, remarkably, there is not one molecule of astringency, just fine-grained, raspy traction which offsets the exuberance of the fruit.

Very fine and polished with blackberry and blueberry character. Medium to full body, integrated tannins and a focused finish. Almost Burgundian.

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, April 2018

Composed of 54.4% Merlot and 45.6% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Quintus is deep garnet-purple in color and charges out of the gate with exuberant scents of blueberry compote, plum preserves and fresh mulberries with touches of sandalwood, powdered cinnamon, potpourri and forest floor plus a waft of black tea. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with expressive black and blue fruit layers, framed by wonderfully velvety tannins, finishing long and layered.

Owned by the Domaine Clarence Dillon family of Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion, this label was produced from the vineyard formerly known as Tertre Daugay. Since 2011, it has been combined with the adjacent L'Arrosée vineyard (that was more recently purchased) to form what is now known as Quintus. In 2017, the vines in the valley portion of the vineyards were completely wiped out by frost, with the north bank partially destroyed but the south bank saved. Overall yields were 30 hectoliters per hectare.
