Planted in 1958 using massal selection, which may make the difference compared to the Clos de Bèze. Of the two, the Chambertin has a darker purple colour, clearly the more massive wine, albeit with a minor touch of reduction at present. The attack is in an entirely different register, this stands up much more nobly, with a much longer finish. A little blackcurrant leaf note returns at the finish.
This is at once more restrained and much more floral in character with its slightly cooler nose of mostly red berries, spice and whiffs of earth and game nuances. The more refined and more mineral-driven larger-scaled flavors somehow manage to be delicate but powerful before terminating in a youthfully austere, dusty and noticeably warm finale. While the warmth isn't as apparent as it is on the Clos de Bèze, it's still not subtle.
