Amazing aromas of lilac, violet, crushed blueberry and mineral that turn to black pepper and spices follow throughto a full-bodied, medium-sweet palate, with a long, chewy finish. Evolves to tar and asphalt. Really held back, yetpowerful grip slaps you. This is mind-blowing in texture. The greatest Dow ever made. Best after 2022.
Picked at a lower Baume than the Grahams (3.4) with the backbone sourced from Touriga Nacional in Bomfim this has a more austere nose, introverted with blackberry, cigar box, raspberry leaf, a touch of cold stones and blueberry. Complex but you have to come to it - it does not come to you. The palate is masculine, aloof, beautifully balanced, spicy and earthy. Very structured on the mid-palate, almost foursquare but I find the focus and the sense of symmetry bewitching. Not a port that will please everyone, but one that Dow-lovers will adore. That includes me by the way. Aristocratic!
The 2007 Dow's Vintage Port is one of the stars of the vintage. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it offers up an already complex bouquet of mineral, pencil lead, licorice, spice box, and assorted black fruits. On the palate it is quite massive, slightly dry in the house style, and packed with fruit. It has the structure to be one of the long distance runners of the vintage taking as much as 20 years to reach its peak and drinking well through 2050. As an aside, I was able to taste the individual components of this wine on the day prior to this tasting. The final blend is better than any of its parts.
Deep black-ruby color. Knockout nose offers distinctly wine-like aromas of redcurrant, cedar, licorice and molasses, with a medicinal reserve and a roasted nuance. Classically drier in the Dow style, with superb precision and elegance to the very intense flavors of black fruits, licorice, cedar and minerals. Wonderfully balanced, vinous and seamless young vintage port. Really reverberates on the finish, which boasts superb grip and palate-staining chocolatey persistence. Will be a long-distance runner.
Very dark and brooding to look at. Dry and complex with some notes of vegetation on the nose. Really rather polished and superior. Masses of extract, not an awful lot of sugar, but refinement and breed. If it were a person it would definitely be a man. In a pin striped suit (as this taster is today, funnily enough). Clean peppermint finish.
Intense aromas of blackberry, wet earth and grape follow through to a full body, with medium-to-light sweetness, very big tannins and a mouthfilling finish. Round and delicious already. Has the stuffing to age. Powerful.
Rather reluctant aromas - cassis, black cherry and cake spice on the slow, gradual finish. Lots of quality here - the length is especially grandiose. 20% (RH)
