Churton's Sauvignon Blanc has been a Farr favourite for decades. Sam Weaver - founder and owner - is now joined by his sons making wines from Marlborough that have more in common with wines from the Loire than those of his neighbours. Despite the much lower yields and costlier farming practices he employs, the wines remain superb value for money.
Marlborough is full of fertile land, much of it farmed by machine with the sole purpose of producing significant volumes of distinctly average Sauvignon Blanc. These wines are for the most part pungent and stylised, lacking both subtlety or substance. At Churton, biodynamically farmed, densely planted vineyards on rolling hills produce fruit of much, much higher quality from significantly lower yields. Spontaneous fermentations are slower and more difficult, but they bring texture and depth to the wines.
The 2022 has received strong press in Vinous. Rebecca Gibb MW calls it "an elegant and pure expression that has had plenty of TLC", awarding it 92 points. The wine showed perfectly when tasted at our offices, demonstrating just what can be achieved in Marlborough with effort, know-how and the right attitude.
At £110 per dozen in bond this offers exceptional value for money, especially when compared with the commercial big (and sometimes revered) names. On top of that we are pleased to offer a multi-case rate of £99 per dozen for 2+ cases. This is the perfect wine for the late summer sun and is in our warehouse ready for immediate delivery.
The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough is an elegant and pure expression that has had plenty of TLC. Organically grown and fermented by natural yeasts, partly in puncheons, it offers up delicate floral aromas and fine citrus flavors. While there's a slight hint of warmth (14%) alcohol, it does not overly concern me. Enjoy in the first 4 years. 2023 - 2026
Lots of grapefruit with sliced lime and lemon. Mineral, stone and white-flower undertones, too. Medium to full body with a crisp finish. Drink now. Screw cap.
