One of the finest Pinots from Central Otago we’ve tasted - Two Paddocks
Every Friday afternoon at around 5pm one of us at the Farr office dives into the cellar and picks out a decent bottle for everyone to taste blind. With the weekend around the corner there’s only one requirement: it has got to be good.
A few weeks ago we were given a stunning Pinot Noir. Many of us were convinced it was a red Burgundy of at least Premier Cru quality, but we finally managed to narrow it down to Central Otago in New Zealand. None of us, however, could pin-point the estate. It was Two Paddocks, a producer none of us had tasted before but one we were now hooked on.
Their 2015 Estate Pinot Noir is spicy with generous bramble fruit and lifted by refreshing acidity. It has a crunchy and fresh red berry core with refined, ripe tannins and is perfect to drink already. Smooth and pure through to the finish, this has to be one of the finest examples of Central Otago Pinot Noir that we have ever tasted.
But listen to this. It also turns out that the bloke who makes it, Sam Neill, was so committed to the project that he worked a second job as an actor, starring in little-known American films such as “Jurassic Park” and “The Hunt for Red October”. They’re a bit niche so don’t worry if you haven’t heard of them.
His family background in New Zealand has always been firmly rooted in farming, so if his acting career doesn’t take off, at least he’s got some exceptional wines to fall back on. Best of luck to you Sam!

Complex and intriguing, with fresh raspberry, cherry and tangerine flavors. Sleek and polished, but showing plenty of traction from the tannins. The details are sophisticated and aromatic, delivering notes of dried lavender, black tea, vanilla bean and toasted cumin seed. Drink now through 2030.
Matured in 75% second use and 25% new oak for 11 months, the Estate Pinot Noir has a vivid ruby hue with a wonderful nose of ripe hedgerow fruit, blackberry, cherry and raspberry with a little sappy, sweet vanilla. The palate is spicy with generous bramble fruit lifted by refreshing acidity. Lightly peppery and crunchy with refined, fine, ripe tannins, this is perfect to drink already. Smooth and pure through to the finish, this is quintessential and one of the finest examples of Central Otago Pinot Noir that we have tasted.
