2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Beaucastel...and Friends

When Mother Nature is kind to the Rhône Valley, she certainly is extremely kind! Whilst 2016 was a fabulous vintage for the region, 2017 has also produced some absolutely stunning wines, many of which might even eclipse their much-lauded 2016 counterparts.

One such wine is the great Château de Beaucastel, whose red Châteauneuf has received an even higher score in 2017 (95-97 points from Jeb Dunnuck) than their excellent 2016 (which had 94-97 originally). Marc Perrin believes that his 2017 is as good as (if not slightly better) than his 2007 - and that is high praise indeed! Sadly volumes were 40% down in 2017 compared to 2016 as it was the driest vintage in 30 years - perhaps Mother Nature is not so generous after all!

To walk away from such an extreme harvest with something so impressive is kudos indeed to the Perrins, who continue to provide the benchmark for quality in this historic region. However, it is not just Beaucastel itself that gives reason to be impressed. The estate's consistently impressive Côtes-du-Rhône Coudoulet Rouge is a bargain at just £140 per 12 bottles in bond.

20 kilometres north east of the Perrin's base lies the historic town of Gigondas, an altogether cooler appellation than that of Châteauneuf. The 10 hectare vineyard of Clos des Tourelles has produced a 94-96 point wine which is just £340 per 12 in bond.

The wines of Vinsobres have been described as the Côte-Rôtie of the Southern Rhône and the Perrin's Vieilles Vignes Hauts de Julien (93-95 points, Jeb Dunnuck) is a tiny, 500 case cuvée that punches well above its £210 per 12 price tag.

“Moving to the two Châteauneuf-du-Pape releases and 35% Mourvèdre, 25% Grenache, 8% Syrah, 12% Counoise, the rest other permitted varieties (Marc calls this a Mourvèdre vintage), the 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape sports an inky purple color as well as a textbook Mourvèdre nose of black, black fruits, smoked meats, crushed rocks, charcoal, and pepper. It's deep and full-bodied, with beautiful purity and building structure. Production is down 40%, but this brilliant wine is certainly in the same league as the 2016."

“A tremendous effort, might Beaucastel's 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape outshine even the 2016? I tasted a preliminary blend that Marc Perrin said represented 80% of the wine, and it showed ridiculous floral and fresh aromas of licorice, lavender and spice, all backed by tremendous fruit that went beyond black and red and into hints of exotic stone fruit. The final blend will likely contain more than 10% Counoise, the highest proportion ever utilized at the estate. It's rich and concentrated yet silky and lithe, with a fantastically long, elegant finish."

“Tasted as a representative sample that was blended from several foudres, the 2017 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel looks to be another sensational example of this wine. Sourced just outside the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, it's full-bodied yet silky and long, with standout aromas of lavender and crushed stone backed by layers of cherry and berry fruit. Let's hope the prices don't escalate too much given the vintage's low yields."

“More red fruits, garrigue, spice, and obvious minerality define the 2017 Gigondas Clos des Tourelles, which comes from vines inside the village of Gigondas. It's full-bodied, elegant and seamless, with gorgeous purity of fruit, and fine yet certainly present tannin. It's going to drink beautifully out of the gate and keep for 10-15 years."

“Consistently one of the gems of the Southern Rhône, I always feel the 2017 Vinsobres Les Hauts de Julien has a slightly Northern Rhône-like style. Cassis, black cherries, violets, spring flowers, and menthol notes all emerge from this deep purple-colored beauty. Medium to full-bodied, ripe, and opulent on the palate, it has ripe, polished tannin, a layered texture and gorgeous purity."
