The New Vintage of "One of Barolo's unquestioned grands crus" - 2015 Costamagna

We first heard of Rocche Costamagna when a sample of their spectacular 2013 landed on our doorstep. We couldn't believe that such an impressive, instantly pleasurable wine from such a great vineyard was available at such a reasonable price, despite Galloni labeling it as "one of Barolo's unquestioned grands crus". Today we are offering the newly released 2015 vintage - another brilliant example of Nebbiolo and a wine that yet again represents remarkable value for money.

James Suckling and his team are very excited about the 2015 vintage. They believe that it is the best vintage since 2010 and they say it might even be better. "The wines are exuberantly fragrant and show fresh clear fruit on the nose with abundant aromatic complexity. Structurally they are rich in ripe, fine and powerful tannins… These wines also have the great fortune of offering instant appeal as well as more in-depth attraction, which is the hallmark of a truly great vintage." More specifically, they also loved this wine, giving it 96 points and saying it has "a superb array of finely detailed tannins and impeccably concentrated red cherries that have pitch-perfect ripeness."

Sandwiched between the villages of Annunziata and La Morra, the Rocche dell'Annunziata vineyard is one of Barolo’s very best. Wines from this vineyard have a very silky texture, a black cherry fruit profile and a long, spicy finish. Often, they can command a very high price too. For example, Roberto Voerzio’s wine from the same vineyard will cost you upward of £1,200 a case but you can pick up Costamagna's for just £240 per 12 bottles in bond.

When you consider the strength of the vintage, producer and the iconic vineyard, it's clear that this wine is an absolute bargain. Don't miss it.
