2012 Brunello di Montalcino - "Don't miss buying some"

We don’t often send out big offers with lots of wines as it can sometimes feel like an information overload. However, when a region has lots of different producers making very different styles of wine, as is the case in Brunello, we think it is important to at least offer a wider choice than perhaps we normally would. Even more so when that region has had a great vintage – and, whilst some critics have stopped short of putting 2012 on a par with the great 2010, most agree that this is a truly outstanding year for Brunello.

The ever effusive James Suckling calls the vintage “a rockstar” and goes on to say that: “Fans of Brunello di Montalcino are in for a treat…[I] was impressed with [the wines’] beautiful aromas, vibrant fruit, lively acidity, and ultra-fine tannins. These sangioveses are much more precise and finer than the bolder and riper 2011s. They have more in common with the legendary 2010 vintage and are most like the 2004s, a harmonious and gorgeous year for Brunellos.”

Ian d’Agata, Antonio Galloni’s colleague at Vinous.com, says that the wines are: “characterized by impeccable balance, vibrant acidity and fine-grained tannins. They are not especially luscious or fleshy, but they are blessed with precise aromas and flavors of mainly red fruits, blood orange and minerals, and will prove very ageworthy… a few producers I spoke with believe that the 2012s are most reminiscent of the very fine 2004s (for my part, I think the 2012s are less powerful and tannic).”

Suckling summarises the vintage by saying: “Most of the wines are so drinkable now, but they have the balance and structure to improve with age…Don’t miss buying some 2012, especially if you missed out on 2010.

For this offer, we’ve included a note on each of the producers (beneath the table below) plus we’ve highlighted a few key words that we think summarise the style of the producer and the wines. All wines are offered in 6 bottle cases and will be available for delivery in late June of this year.

Altesino

One of the region’s most innovative estates, Altesino was the first to introduce the concept of a single ‘cru’ vineyard and the first to use French oak (without turning its back on the more traditional treatments). The buzzword for Altesino’s wines is elegance – even the broody Montosoli manages power and grace effortlessly.

Argiano

The history surrounding this estate is mind blowing. Wine has been made here since the 16th century, possibly earlier. The style is one of ripeness but with an acidity that ensures the wine is never over the top. Very good value, very approachable and ultimately, very impressive.

Casanova di Neri

A superstar of the region, Casanova di Neri’s Giacoma Neri has crafted a reputation for being able to make great wine in almost any vintage. The attention to detail in the winemaking process manifests itself through the complexity and texture of these wines. Their Tenuta Nuova is a blend of the best of his vineyards.

Fuligni

If you are a fan of classically styled Brunello, then Fuligni is the producer for you. The only noticeable change over the years has been a more measured approach towards tannin – today, these are silky and integrated.

Giodo

Having made some great wines at estates such as Casanova di Neri, Petrolo and Brancaia, Carlo Ferrini now has his own tiny estate in Montalcino. Whilst his previous projects were all about power, his signature here is a lightness of touch. These are gentle, restrained wines from an extrovert winemaker.

Poggio Antico

Just south west of Montalcino's famed historical centre lies Poggio Antico. With some of the highest vineyards in the region, finesse and tempered power are the signature characteristics that run through both their Brunellos. Their normale is very traditional and their Altero is more modern yet both maintain the freshness and elegance that altitude brings.

Le Potazzine

Giuseppe Gorelli cut his teeth at the Consorzio del Brunello under the great Giulio Gambelli of Pergole Torte fame. Upon leaving he went to Due Portine (his father’s estate) but then bought a fantastic vineyard next door and began making high-tone, pure and fresh Brunello himself. Sadly, there isn’t much of it…

Le Ragnaie

With vines at over 550m above sea level, Riccardo Campinoti has mastered the fine balance between power and freshness. The wines are silky and elegant with complexity in abundance. The Vecchie Vigne is a “textbook Brunello” which will need time to show its true colours. The Fornace is a big, rich wine created from a special selection of the best parcels from across their vineyards.

San Filippo

Roberto Gianelli founded this estate in 1972 on some of the finest terroir in the region (next to Biondi-Santi’s prestigious Il Greppo vineyard). Production is low, and excitement surrounding these approachable, juicy, complex wines is growing. Le Lucére is from a northeast facing vineyard and is one for the long haul.

Siro Pacenti

Giancarlo Pacenti took over the family estate in 1988 and is renowned for making pure, bold wines with real site typicity. He makes three Brunellos - Pelagrilli is his entry level wine yet it comes from a single vineyard, Vecchie Vigne is made from 35+ year old vines and PS is his Riserva (released later).
