The 2024 Chenin Blanc Granite comes from the decomposed granite soils in the Eikelaan Vineyard and spends 11 months in 225-litre used French oak. This has plenty of energy and focus on the nose, touches of pressed yellow flowers infuse the white fruit, a hint of stem ginger in the background. The palate is very well balanced with a smooth and slightly viscous texture, a fine bead of acidity, immense purity of fruit with an elegant, almost understated finish. Superb. Drink 2026-2040.
One of a trio of brilliant single-site Chenin Blancs from Chris and Andrea Mullineux (the power couple of the Swartland), this hails from a two-hectare parcel on the Paardeberg. Fermented with full malolactic, it has lots of depth, weight and texture, racy acidity, stony intensity and flavours of yellow apple, citrus and grapefruit.
A racy style of Chenin Blanc, the Granite opens with notes of apple, nutmeg and a stony, steely tension on the nose. The palate is sappy and appetising, with broad acidity cutting through the core of quince and pear fruit. There is a touch of white and green peppercorns here, adding some real intrigue. This is an embryonic, tightly wound wine, but it is loaded with potential, finishing with firm acids, a touch of cream and more of that nutmeg spice.
