Readers shouldn't neglect the 2023 Mâcon-Pierreclos Le Chavigne, a medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny wine redolent of pear, peach, toasted nuts and iodine. Underpinned by racy acids and framed by chalky extract, it reflects the quality of the vintage at this address.
This wine was made from the vines lower down the slope in Jean-Marie Guffens' "Chavigne" vineyard in the village of Pierreclos. A third concrete and the rest oak, of which 25% is new. Jean-Marie thinks that it will provide early drinking pleasure but keep for up to 15 years. Bright colour with lots of savoury, leesy depth and wood spice, this has a layered and spicy nose that should knit together well with time in barrel. The palate has a superb texture, silky and seductive, revealing ripe, juicy peach fruit. There is crunch and intrigue, this is a wine that demonstrates Jean-Marie's prowess when it comes to the press. It is a big, bold wine but one that will drink well in relative youth.
