The most memorable Gewurztraminer I have tasted is the 1989 Clos Windsbuhl. It is also one of the most compelling white wines that I have ever had. Not only is it extraordinarily concentrated, but there is enough acidity to hold everythig together and give the wine a sense of vibrancy and brilliant focus. The spicy, floral, smoky, mineral - and superripe fruit-scented aroma is followed by layer upon layer of fruit that tease and seduce the taster. The finish must last well over a minute. This full-bodied, perfectly rendered, dry white wine has presence in the glass that only a few Grand Cru White Burgundies possess.
