The 2024 Syrah spends ten months in concrete with partially submerged cap, 100% whole bunch. This has an intense bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, pressed violet and crushed stone, very precise and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, powerful, burly even, assertive with graphite-tinged black fruit on the finish. This will need time to tame it. Drink 2030-2055.
Donovan Rall uses fruit from one of the vineyards that supplies Ava to make this mid-tier Syrah from schist soils. Fermented with whole clusters, it's a sappy, serious, concrete-aged red that's compact, dense and built to age, thanks to low yields. Kelp, fynbos and High-Church incense aromas segue into a palate of damson, steak tartare and liquorice. Drink 2027-34.
