The latest rendition of Sélèque's NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Quintette is based on the 2019 vintage, complemented by 20% foudre-aged reserve wines drawn from a solera. Offering up aromas of hazelnuts, flowers, crisp pear and almonds, it's medium to full-bodied, with an ample, fleshy core of fruit and a layered, pillowy profile. Three or four grams of naturally residual sugar obviate the need for dosage. 2023 - 2035
A brilliant wine, this year's Quintette is based around the 2020 vintage and blends five of Jean-Marc's favourite terroirs from Vertus, Epernay, Pierry, Mardeuil and Dizy, from vines planted as far back as 1950. 100% Chardonnay and fully fermented in small oak barrels. 20% reserve wine held in large casks since 2012. Bright pale lemon in colour, the nose is bursting with confit lemon, poached pear and lightly toasted cereals. The palate is focused and direct with pure citrus and white stone fruit, broadened by a persistent and fine mousse. Ethereal yet intense, the fruit dominates at this early stage but there are light autolytic notes of fresh brioche and pine nuts. Vibrant and steely, this is an acid-driven Champagne that manages deceptive weight of fruit, fleshing out to reveal its ageing potential on the finish. Drink now, or over the coming 12+ years. 9,000 bottles produced.
