Gaja's 2018 Barolo Conteisa is elegant, gracious and classy to the core. Silky tannins and lifted, floral aromatics give this mid-weight Barolo tons of charm. This is classic Cerequio. Sweet red berry, pomegranate, kirsch, blood orange and mint notes, that are such signatures of this La Morra site, are beautifully delineated. All the elements are so nicely balanced. I can’t wait to see how the 2018 ages. The Gajas were especially selective in 2018. Bottled production for Conteisa is down 50%. 2026-2043
The fresh and just ripe strawberry aromas really come through here, together with some licorice and floral highlights. Medium to full body with fine, focused tannins that are vertical and bring your palate down through the wine. A solid and beautiful wine for the vintage. Try after 2025.
Gaja's Conteisa vineyard is in Cerequio in La Morra. The vineyards face south with a clay-limestone soil with a large presence of sand. The 2018 Barolo Conteisa has some sweet ripe cherry, pretty red fruits and sweet spice notes, with maybe a hint of rose. There is just a beautiful seamless texture and weightless quality to the wine with super-refined tannins which are integrated into the wine. The finish has a lovely freshness. It is sublimely elegant and harmonious. Begin to drink in one year and keep for up to 20. Right now I prefer the 2018 Barolo to the 2017 - it is more harmonious, the tannins are more integrated and it has a juicy delicacy.
