Offering up a youthfully reductive nose of pear, lime zest, toasted nuts and wet stones, the 2023 Saint-Véran Premiers Jus is medium to full-bodied, satiny and electric, with racy acids and a level of cut and tension that's rare in this vintage. It's derived from the first-press juice from Guffens's holdings in lieu-dit Les Combes.
This "Premiers Jus" cuvée was made from the first juices of "Les Combes", "Les Carettes" and a small part of "Clos des Poncetys". Pale lemon in colour, this was in a slightly muted phase of elevage when we tasted it, but there is lots of potential here. Toasted almonds, confit citrus and peach juice all come through on nose and palate. The texture is very impressive, pithy and dry but not drying, weaving through the fruit to keep everything vibrant, crunchy and moreish. Premier Jus bottlings always feel refreshing and vibrant, and that is certainly the case here. I'm looking forward to tasting this from bottle, I expect the energy and structure to reveal superb fruit in time.
