Morey Saint Denis Clos Baulet, Domaine des Lambrays 2022

Tasting Notes

This wine is refined and ethereal, if not a bit fragile, with aromas of dried roses, wet forest floor, grilled citrus, iron and pretty red berry fruit. On the palate it shows beautiful berries and fine chalky tannins that are cohesively knit. Peppery spices loom large in the ethereal finish that lasts almost a minute. This is one of the four new additions that Domaine des Lambrays acquired. The smallest cru of Morey-Saint-Denis at just 0.87 hectare. Drink or hold.

This is also quite floral in character with its equally cool and restrained aromas that derive primarily from the red side of the fruit spectrum. The rich, succulent and highly seductive medium weight flavors exude a subtle bead of minerality that adds a sense of lilt to the lingering and balanced finish. This dusty effort is actually fairly powerful and clearly built to repay a decade plus of keeping. Worth a look. Note: from a .30 ha parcel; 50% whole clusters

A new appellation, coming from the Domaine Cosson vineyards which now form part of the Lambrays stable. The plot forms the top section, just below the Lambrays buildings, on brown clay soil. 40% whole bunch vinification. A cherry to ruby colour. Fresh cherry with white pepper on the nose, the Clos Baulet comes across as a little more slender than Les Loups. 40 hl/ha, very juicy, the stems just give that final tingle, to a very attractive and juicy red fruit. Lovely aftertaste.

The Clos Baulet stayed with the Cossons when they sold the Domaine des Lambrays; their owned one-third of the total surface of 0.9 hectares. The wine is very distinct from the 'Les Loups' bottling. It has a ripe red currant fruit aroma strongly coloured by hints of black tea, menthol, and peony that Jacques Devauges calls 'végétal noble'. The tannins are less grippy, and the texture is enlivened by a bit more fresh acidity. This wine will not be approachable as early as Les Loups, but it should show great complexity in five to seven years. (Drink between 2028-2055)
