The Olerasay 5° comes from the perpetual solera that imparts a secondary concentration in the winery through evaporation. This now includes vintages from 2008 to 2024. This has a less expressive bouquet compared to the '24 Straw Wine, opening gradually with smoked walnut, dried honey and wet wool scents. The palate is unctuous on the entry, a keen line of acidity maintaining freshness, lacquering the mouth with honey, fig and quince flavours. But really, it is all about the texture and decadence of this wine. Outstanding. Drink 2025-2050.
Olerasay uses raw material from the same two vineyards as the Mullineux's Straw Wine, both of which are located on the Paardeberg. Drawn from a solera that features components from every vintage between 2008 and 2024, it's very sweet, exotic and intense, with layers of pawpaw, nectarine and coconut, a rancio undertone and enough acidity to balance the 364 grams of residual sugar.
This latest release of straw wine from Mullineux is a triumph. The Chenin here yields to its winemaking process, adding notes of lychee, apricot and honey to the core notes of membrillo and tarte tatin. The sense on the nose is somewhere between a Vin de Constance and Tokaji, yet the purity is higher thanks to the lack of botrytis. The palate shows notes of marzipan next to dense notes of apricot tarts, freshly baked viennoiserie and salted butter. It is sweet but never heavy, tones of dried fruit, cinnamon and nutmeg coming through. There is a pithiness and texture to this wine, giving grip and providing balance for what is a lot of residual sugar. The result is refreshing and very, very long. A wine any serious collector or lover of sweet wine must experience at least once.
