Tasting Notes

Scented, deep and savory nose showing pine cones, sour cherries, redcurrants, moss and baking spices. On the palate, light-footed and elegant, with a medium body and very fine, silky tannins. Beautifully fresh and vertical. Pure and succulent wild strawberry and sour cherry notes linger. 609 cases produced. Drink or hold.

The 2021 Ignis Pinot Noir comes from a vineyard that has granite and clay soil, offering a firmer nose and a medium ruby color that's slightly darker than the Vrede Pinot Noir. It displays elegant dark cherry notes with black raspberry and rose as notions of orange rind and potpourri sway with red tea aromas. Medium-bodied, the Pinot Noir grows on the palate and displays a firm tannic edge with balanced energetic acidity. Give it another year in the bottle, and it will have no problems aging until its 15th birthday. Just under 3,700 bottles were produced after resting 11 months in 24% new French oak. Drink 2024-2036.

Primary aromatics of red currant, a touch of fynbos and white pepper. The palate is delicate with good clarity of fruit, bright acidity and fine tannins. Plenty of verve before a salty finish. Alc: 13.19%.

More tentative on the nose than the 2021 Vrede, but, like their other 2021 Pinots, beautifully floral: orange blossom, Turkish delight. More assertive on the palate, however. Smoky, toasty, very intentional. Goji berries. Very confident. The biggest tannins of the three 2021s. Much more showy! Burlesque drama and flair. Drink Window: 2024 – 2031.
