The 2020 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Boz comes from the pure chalk Coldharbour Vineyard in West Sussex. In true house style, it did not undergo malolactic fermentation and spent four years on lees after vinification in stainless steel. The nose is bright and fresh, offering a touch of green apple and lemon with a subtle saltiness. The palate has wonderful energy, driven by its lemon brightness and deep chalkiness. Beautifully clear-cut with sprightly mousse, this wine will benefit from more bottle age. Pure, brisk, crisp and delicious. Disgorged: February 2024. (Drink between 2025-2032)
2020 is a superb vintage chez Sugrue, as proven by this cuvée Boz, a 100% Chardonnay from Mount Harry vineyard, which Dermot and Anna consider to be a Grand Cru. All steel fermentation, no MLF, and 5g/l dosage. On opening this latest rendition is lively in mousse and aromatics, bursting from the glass with notes of ripe red apple, yuzu and white peach. The time on lees has given this a light biscuit layer, too, but the dazzling fruit leads for now. This follows on the palate, which has a punchy, powerful mousse that will soften nicely with a little time in bottle, and for now lifts the fruit into notes of apple blossom and passion flower. There are good bones here, piercing acid, textural richness and purity of fruit. Hints of brioche and biscuit dough add some savour, but for now it is the intensity and purity that shine. I'd give this a year in bottle before getting stuck in, and enjoy it over the following decade. Another excellent Sugrue.
