The 2022 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is an elegant, sophisticated wine. Black cherry, plum, new leather, liquorice, cloves and mocha are all amplified. All of the natural intensity of the year comes through in a potent, decidedly virile Vigna del Sorbo. The 2022 spent 12 months in French oak barriques and a second year in French oak casks.
Blackberry, black currant, plum, tar and sweet spice flavors are aligned with thick, beefy tannins in this red. Unevolved at this stage, showing plenty of fruit that needs to come together with the structural components.
The Fontodi 2022 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Panzano Vigna del Sorbo is an organic wine with a broad and rich personality. On some levels, I prefer the Terrazze San Leonlino, but the two wines are similar. This historic wine represents a selection of fruit from a nine-hectare plot with vines that are over 50 years old on shale galestro soils. It ages in barrique and French oak foudre of 24 months. Vigna del Sorbo is more horizontal in delivery, with lots of dark fruit, developed tannins and a plump mouthfeel. Production is 25,000 bottles.
Clear and fresh aromas of black cherries and citrus rind with some blood orange undertones. Medium-bodied, firm and silky, with a polished texture and a long, intense finish. Very fine tannins. Give it two or three years to soften slightly but there’s pretty energy to this. From organically grown grapes.
