Tasting Notes

Tasted single blind against its peers. I have always felt that I was mean to the La Tour Blanche when I first tasted it out of barrel, principally because of the excessive level of residual sugar. There is just a touch of reduction on the nose but it opens up nicely. The palate is very classy: a hell of a lot of fruit concentration and layer upon layer of botrytized fruit. It is not exactly subtle and is missing some finesse, whilst the finish is long and persistent, disguising its sucrosity well.

Loads of ripe fruit in this one, with pineapple, mango and honey undertones. Full-bodied, thick and layered. Medium sweet. Spicy, fruity aftertaste. 90 -93

Mid honeyed gold. Rather loose on the nose. Big and sweet and yet there is a little streak of green acidity too. But a bit aggressive on the palate. And pretty soft and loose

In recent years this wine has hovered between four and five stars. This time there is outstandingly aromatic intensity, but the question is whether the evident citrus fruit acidity is enough to ensure the enormous richness and sweetness is in balance. Time will tell. 4 stars.

I was a little too hard on this wine at primeur, when I was perturbed by the blowsiness on the nose. However, after bottling the aromatics have become more delineated with scents of white peach, lemon curd, apricot and honey suckle. The palate is balanced with thick layers of botrytized fruit: honey, mandarin, barley sugar and spice. So unctuous towards the finish that it misses some tension, although overall this is improving with age and deserves a higher commendation. Drink 2012-2030.

This is rather blowsy on the nose and lacks some lift. The palate is better with some attractive minerally fruit, touches of passion fruit and white peach but lacking a little length and vigour. This is a little underwhelming given the quality of other vintages of La Tour Blanche. Perhaps just a little too much residual sugar on the finish? Drink 2010-2020. Tasted April 2008
