Tasting Notes

The debut vintage for this wine made by the team at Cos d'Estournel has proven to be a sleeper of the vintage and is aging beautifully. A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, it exhibits a dark garnet color along with aromas of tobacco leaf, creme de cassis, licorice and cedarwood. Fleshy, medium-bodied, fresh and lively, it is fully mature, but is in no danger of falling apart. Enjoy it over the next several years, as it is a point.

A pleasant and fruity red, with licorice and a hint of fresh herb. Medium-bodied, with good tannins and a velvety palate. 830 cases made

Very sweet and very modern. You would never take this for an AC Médoc! Luscious, sweet, round - very ripe - but good cool-soil freshness too.
A great start

La Goulee, named after a small port in the northern Medoc, is a special project of Cos d’Estournel’s proprietor, Michel Reybier, and his winemaker, Jean-Guillaume Prats. A sleeper of the vintage as well as a brilliant introduction to a complex as well as hedonistic Bordeaux, the 2003 Goulee is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. This impressive wine possesses a deep purple color in addition to an amazingly evolved bouquet of creme de cassis, licorice, and smoke. Broad, savory, expansive, pure, and beautifully made, it represents an elegant, complex Bordeaux made in a forward, modern style that provides immediate appeal. It should age well for 7-8 years.

An innovative effort from Cos d’Estournel’s Jean-Guillaume Prats and Michel Reydier, this complex, rich, opulently styled wine is perfect for readers looking for a modern style of Bordeaux to drink during its first 10-12 years of life. Notes of dried Provencal herbs intermixed with creme de cassis and cedar wood are followed by a fleshy, succulently textured wine with wonderful opulence, freshness, plump, rich fruit, and low acidity. It is a beautiful wine that should have huge crowd appeal and satisfy on both the hedonistic and intellectual levels. Bordeaux could certainly use more wines like this to re-energize the marketplace.

Deep ruby/purple-colored with classic aromas of cassis, licorice, underbrush, and spice box, it reveals classified growth quality along with supple tannin, and a forward, fleshy mouthfeel. This is the type of wine Bordeaux producers should be making more frequently, but the price must be realistic given the world-wide competition. This is a new concept from Michel Reydier and Jean-Guillaume Prats, respectively the owner and winemaker of Cos d’Estournel. Isolating some good properties and attempting to create a high quality, branded wine from the Medoc, this stylish blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot is impressive. Let’s hope the price stays in the $20-30 range where it would represent good value. Drink this well-made claret between 2004-2014.
