Tasting Notes

Like many former Bordeaux underachievers, Malartic-Lagraviere has been making beautifully elegant, classic/textbook Pessac-Leognans under a relatively new Belgian administration. Plum, cassis, smoked herb, tobacco, and licorice-like scents emerge from the medium dark garnet-tinged 2003. Dry tannins in the finish do not detract from the wine’s overall seductive personality. While this is not one of Malartic-Lagraviere’s finest successes over recent years, it is an excellent wine to enjoy over the next 10-12 years.

Subtle aromas of blackberry, tobacco and cherry follow through to a medium-bodied palate, with firm tannins and a medium finish. A bit austere. Best after 2010. 6,250 cases made.

This property continues to demonstrate a sure hand in winemaking, fashioning elegant, impeccably well-made offerings that respect the vintage conditions and the appellation of origin. The 2003 is a beautiful expression of Graves, offering up aromas of scorched earth, plums, sweet and sour cherries, flowers, and tobacco leaves. Nicely textured with considerable finesse as well as savory fruit flavors and good body, this beauty should drink well young, and age nicely for 12-14 years.
