A reasonably fresh nose of very ripe red berries, earth and a hint of minerality leads to rich, round and solidly well-concentrated medium-bodied flavors that exude a fine dry extract that buffers the firm tannins on the delicious if ever-so-mildly-austere finish. This should be good though it will not necessarily be a good candidate for drinking young.
Tasted out of barrel at the Domaine. This has a slightly later malo that is not quite finished. There is a pleasant succulent on the nose with dark cherry and blueberry fruit. The palate has firm tannins, very good depth of flavour with raspberry and wild strawberry notes, mixed with a slight nuttiness that comes through on the finish. Good potential. Tasted November 2010.
The 2009 Charmes-Chambertin comes across as rich, opulent and totally intense in its dark, jammy fruit. The fruit was destemmed 60-70%, making it one of the wines with the lowest amount of whole clusters. The Charmes stands apart from most of the wines in the lineup for its boisterous personality. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.
