Tasting Notes

The 2003 is a dense, corpulent effort with a dark ruby/purple color, impressive intensity, and aromas of charcoal, white flowers, blueberries, black currants, and smoke. Medium-bodied, with light tannin, and serious concentration as well as length, it may merit an even higher score than shown. Anticipated maturity: now-2018.

As I reported last year, this is an atypically powerful, blockbuster Faugeres. The proprietor, Madame Guisez, has hit the bull’s eye with this opaque purple-hued 2003. Boasting flamboyant notes of blackberries, chocolate, espresso, sweet cherries, and toast, it is an opulent, full-bodied, powerful, rich yet well-proportioned effort with decent acidity, loads of glycerin, and a heady, full-throttle finish. This mouthfilling claret will benefit from 1-3 years of bottle age. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2018.

An atypically powerful, quasi-blockbuster was produced at this St.-Emilion vineyard that has made many fine wines over the last 4-5 years. Having clay and limestone soils no doubt proved beneficial in producing a saturated dense purple-colored 2003 with a big, exotic perfume of blueberries, blackberries, melted asphalt, toast, and espresso roast scents. Powerful and full-bodied, but neither over the top not heavy, this rich, authoritatively flavorful 2003 is unquestionably the biggest wine I have ever tasted from Faugeres. Give it 2-3 years of bottle age, and enjoy it over the following 15+ years.
