Stéphane Derenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont produce this impressively concentrated wine from vines that are situated between Pavie and Troplong Mondot.
A mouth-filling wine with supple and complete tannins that are caressing and engaging. Fascinating aromas and flavors of blackberries, iodine and violets. Extremely long and beautiful. Wait until 2024.
The 2017 Pavie Macquin is medium to deep garnet in color. It rolls out of the glass with expressive notes of warm redcurrant, black raspberries, and mulberries, plus suggestions of sauteed herbs, cast iron pan, and dried rose, with a hint of aniseed. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is taut and muscular with chewy tannins and a bright, refreshing finish.
Well-controlled damson notes are joined by an elegant balance of oak and fruit. This is austere and tightly buttoned up, taking its time to show itself. There's a burst of liquorice root and some salinity, and the limestone touch is clear, but it doesn't quite build over the palate as you might expect it to, suggesting that the fruit was just a fraction under ideal ripeness. Still, this is accomplished winemaking that almost rises above the constraints of the year.
Drinking Window 2025 - 2038
Dark smudgy crimson. Pretty cassis aroma, with the graphite of Cabernet Franc and a touch of elderberry. Mouth-watering freshness, really fruity and rounded. Not fleshy; tight and balanced. Alive and persistent but not a great amount of depth.
Drink 2024-2035
It is a bit of a mixture freshness then sweet fruit richness and depth. The fruit is ripe mid fleshiness but at the back the fresher black fruits give a lighter feel and brightness on the finish. 2025-36
Plush and ripe with some fondant notes and massive oak overlaying the core of black fruit, this is a showy creation and it will appeal to those wine lovers without a sensitive disposition! In need of ten years minimum ageing before you drink it, this is an impressive wine in this vintage and it is one of the most densely coloured wines, too.
Very solid center palate of fruit and firm, silky tannins. Linear and bright with a focused and pretty finish. Full-bodied, tight and precise. Very clear and bright.
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Pavie Macquin comes charging out of the glass with exuberant scents of warm black cherries, blackberry pie and wild blueberry coulis plus hints of menthol, licorice, candied violets and charcuterie. Medium-bodied, the palate is an exercise in precision and poise, featuring a beautiful frame of wonderfully ripe, very fine-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing very long and multilayered. Simply stunning! The blend here is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. It was aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, 70% new.
