Bonnes Mares, Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé 1993

Tasting Notes

(opened from personal storage). The '93 Bonnes Mares is a big and still relatively burly wine with an expressive, intense nose revealing some aged notes (but no sous-bois) to accompany the black fruit followed by muscular, concentrated and beautifully detailed flavors of excellent intensity and first class length. While this is clearly an impressive wine of real quality, there is a slightly rustic side to it that I'm not entirely convinced is ever going to completely disappear. Time will tell but it's clear for the present that this is still on its way up and will require at least another 7 or 8 years of cellar time, perhaps more to arrive at its apogee but it should be well worth the wait. As a result, I am holding my score constant but it's possible that if the rustic aspect does eventually melt away that this could merit a better rating yet. Consistent notes since release.
