From roughly 80-year-old vines cultivated from the Bischöfliche Weingüter until 2002, the 2017 Kanzemer Altenberg Riesling Alte Reben GG is very clear and super ripe but fresh and flinty on the complex, intensely fruity yet refined, elegant, slightly herbal and terribly mineral nose that also reveals a certain oaky (Stockinger?) tone. The palate combines intensity and power with elegance, crystalline purity, mineral freshness and even finesse. This is an enormously long, rich and powerful dry Riesling with the finesse of slate and some minty notes on the aftertaste. What's irritating me here a bit is that on the second day after opening the wine, there is a certain astringency and very, very discreet petrol note. Does the monster get weak knees? I am irritated. This could be spectacularly great as well. Note to self: Taste again and again! 12.5% alcohol. Tasted from AP #17 in June 2019.
