From a vineyard just across the A7 interstate, on the northern edge of Châteauneuf Du Pape and not far from the estate, the 2018 Côtes Du Rhône Coudoulet De Beaucastel offers a pretty, medium to full-bodied, elegant profile that’s a great introduction into the 2018 vintage. Complex notes of garrigue, peppery spice, and dark fruits all emerge from this nuanced, balanced effort that will drink well right out of the gate.
Chock full of juicy red and black fruits on the nose, with a subtle note of white pepper. Fleshy, soft and approachable on the palate, this is sumptuous and approachable with no hard edges. A little black fruit and garrigue adds complexity on the back end. Ready to drink and fantastic value for money!
Still not yet bottled for my June visit (it was scheduled to be bottled at the end of the month), the final blend of the 2017 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel was showing plenty of garrigue and dried-spice notes layered over cherry fruit. Full-bodied, silky textured and long on the finish, it should drink well for a decade or more.
