Tasting Notes

Strange how this wine was never appealing out of barrel, but in bottle it has been a true joy. Here at 15-years young, it has a lovely vibrant nose that is surfeit with mineralité and hints of freshly shucked oyster shells. The palate is very well balanced with a satin-like texture, yet there is an engaging linearity and focus towards the finish, plus a very strong grip suggesting this will be a long-term Canon. Tasted December 2012.

Deep healthy crimson with a lot of development at the rim. Evolved, mild nose. Not especially assertive but well balanced. Fairly traditional build with quite a lot of fine tannins well hidden under a cloak of velvety fruit – but not dramatic! Some might overlook this quite easily.

Now owned by Chanel, this superbly situated vineyard has benefited from serious investment and the same winemaking team that has transformed Rauzan Segla into one of the stars of the Medoc. Pure, traditional Saint Emilion here with finesse and no jam ! A welcome break from the blockbusters. Only 43% of the crop has gone into the first wine (70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc) which is being aged in 70% new oak, 30% 2nd year oak.
