This 28 hectare Saint Emilion property in the suburbs of Libourne is now under the same ownership as Cheval Blanc. Wine-making has changed too with a much more subtle style being produced. The vineyard is planted with 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Elevage is in double sized (500 litre) barrels which are 50% new, and 50% one year old and 10% in foudre. This gives the wine a less oaky taste than under the old regime and the wines produced here now are much more in the sophisticated, silky Cheval Blanc style. Much improved, yet modestly priced.

Deep ruby in colour, with a nose full of ripe red cherries and plums, layered with cedar and sweet smoke. The palate follows, with fleshy red an black fruits at the core accented by by sweet vanilla and toast. There are floral overtones thanks to the fresh acidity, with seamless and soft tannins offering great approachability. Silky smooth and bright in fruit through to the finish. Tasted in Bordeaux.
This has intense aromatics and supple tannins. A little subdued at first, then the floral side begins to burgeon out of the glass. Supple and fresh, nuanced blue and red berry fruits, with strength and precision. Harvest September 10 to October 2. A yield of 41hl/ha. Aged in 500l casks and larger 20hl foudres, 50% new oak. 74% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon. Barrel sample.
Really attractive fruit – fresh, crunchy and fragrant. Round and pure on the palate with good depth and ripe, mellow tannins. Smooth-textured and complete. Now a consistently appealing wine at a (usually) attractive price. (JL)
