Tasting Notes

A blend of 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot, the 2019 Le Dome is deep purple-black in color. It needs a fair bit of coaxing to unlock aromas of redcurrant jelly, chocolate-covered cherries, and violets with wafts of forest floor, dusty soil, cedar chest, and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is both wonderfully intense and light on its feet, framed by ripe, fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long with epic mineral and floral sparks.

Always Cabernet Franc-dominated from a single lieu-dit not far from Angélus, the 2019 Le Dome offers a wonderful purity and freshness, and it shows how good the vintage was for Cabernet Franc. Blackcurrants, violets, spring flowers, and damp earth are just some of its nuances, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, beautiful, seamless tannins, integrated acidity, and a great finish. The purity, precision, and balance are spot on. This is a gorgeous Cabernet Franc that will evolve for 20-25 years, probably longer.

A rich, fragrant red with aromas of mulberries, dark plums, chocolate, cedar, cloves, mushrooms and cigar box. Crushed stone, too. Full-bodied with fine, creamy tannins. Polished and velvety with an intense, perfumed core of dark fruit. Better from 2026.

The 2019 Le Dome offers up rich aromas of jammy berry fruit, vanilla pod, caramel and milk chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, broad and velvety, it's seamless and polished, with an ample core of fruit, lively acids and a nicely integrated, harmonious profile that belies the overtly oaky and rather lactic nose. From the nose alone, the taster expects a monster; yet on the palate this Le Dome is actually surprisingly elegant, showing the results of a clear stylistic evolution over the last decade. Work on oak integration, however, remains to be done. Drink 2025-2050.

A kick of turmeric, cloves, cinammon spice and sweet black cherry get things off to a powerful start. This is an excellent Le Dôme that showcases the big-shouldered signature style of this wine while maintaining a subdued, restrained core of fresh acidities. Skilful winemaking, delivering on its En Primeur promise. Harvest October 1 and 10 (all grapes brought in over two separate days). Neil Whyte winemker full time for Le Dôme since 1995.

“Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Le Dome is a little closed and broody to begin, unfurling to reveal a profound core of preserved plums, fruitcake, chocolate-covered cherries and mocha with nuances of star anise, Sichuan pepper and cardamom. The medium to full-bodied palate is beautifully perfumed with loads of floral notes emerging among the black fruits, framed by remarkably soft, velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant. Gorgeous wine! ”
