Ripe, fresh and densely fruited aromas speak of various dark berries, earth and a whiff of forest floor. The notably finer middle weight flavors exude evident minerality before culminating in a seductively textured if notably firm finish where a touch of bitter cherry pit arises. This is lovely though note that at least some patience is necessary.
As usual, the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru is a blend of Craipillot and Perrières—and, as I've written before, Perrières seems to dominate the cuvée's personality. Bursting with aromas of cherries, raspberries, peonies and orange rind, framed by hints of truffle and espresso roast, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and precise, built around filigree tannins and bright acids. Open and expressive, this cuvée is especially elegant this year.
