This Saint Estèphe property was formerly known as Capbern Gasqueton and has the same owners and wine-making team as Calon Ségur. The vineyard is 38 hectares and planted 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. It is situated, in one block, between Phélan Segur and Meyney. Quality has jumped massively in recent vintages and this is clearly a source of one of Bordeaux's best bargains.

Tasting Notes

Bottled in May 2023, two months before its big brother Calon-Ségur, the 2021 Capbern has turned out very nicely, offering up aromas of dark berries, plums and licorice mingled with subtle hints of lilac, mint and spices. Medium to full-bodied, plush and polished, it's seamless and fleshy, with sweet tannins and good length on the finish. Drink Date: 2025 - 2035

The 2021 Capbern was cropped at 36hL/ha with a 20-day cuvaison, and matured in 60% new oak for a planned 18 months. It has an attractive, fragrant bouquet of vivacious black and blue fruit, a lovely pencil box element emanating from the Cabernet Sauvignon. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, respectable weight and acidity and a saline finish. Not the most complex Saint-Estèphe you will find, but commendable for the vintage and thoroughly enjoyable. (12.8% alcohol)

Capbern escaped the frost in 2021 and has a yield of 36 hl/ha. 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot. Bright purple in colour with a wonderfully aromatic nose of violets, cherry skins and a touch of vanilla. The palate is bright with blue fruit and lively with fresh acidity. This is a compact and succulent wine with soft tannins and moreish sweet fruit that will be delicious in the mid term. Though the fruit is ripe and prominent it is not heavy or opulent thanks to the persistent refreshing acidity. Peppery and driven on the finish.
