The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Charmes comes from 75-year-old vines that yielded just half the normal production due to frost. It has a broody nose, dark berry fruit, wilted rose petals and cold stone aromas, a little curmudgeonly at the moment. The palate is structured and quite masculine for this vineyard, but there is plenty of freshness and tension here, a classic Burgundy Pinot Noir with a sense of energy on the curt finish. I suspect this will flesh out with bottle age. One to watch.
Pleasing fresh mid purple, perfumed nose showing clean new oak as well as floral notes, even the classic violets, this becomes ever more exciting on the nose, from fully ripe grapes. It is soft and easy going at the front of the palate, a little drier behind.
