The wines of Egly-Ouriet are benchmark Grower Champagnes that define the modern landscape of small production and high quality from the region's forward thinking estates. Francis Egly was one of the pioneers in this regard, adopting Burgundian methods with a heavy focus on farming, rather than buying in grapes as is commonplace for the Grandes Marques.
Egly's wines are powerful, gastronomic and complex with a clearly defined style that allows for long-term ageing, even for the wines that are not from a single vintage. Old vines on great terroir are managed skillfully to produce some of the best fruit in all of Champagne. Two presses with customised chilling plates ensure the finest juice is taken, a significant investment that has had a positive impact on quality.
Oak plays a pivotal role in most cuvées, with barrel ageing adding depth and texture over an overt spice from wood. Lees ageing in bottle is long but never excessive, adding further layers of complexity while retaining fruit. Kristaps Karklins, writing for the Wine Advocate, believes it is Egly's "meticulous and unyielding pursuit of quality that finds its expression in some of the most intensely characterful wines produced in France."
We are delighted to offer Egly-Ouriet's 2025 disgorgements, shipped directly from the domaine, headlined by the Brut Grand Cru. The latest release is built around the excellent 2020 vintage (50%), together with the equally impressive 2019 (30%) and 2018 (20%) to make one of the strongest trios we have seen from this estate. It was fermented and matured in oak ahead of four years on lees in bottle before disgorgement. It is another belter from Egly, driven and layered, lightly toasted and fragrant with real structure and depth. You can drink it now but it will only improve with 2-3 years in bottle and has a long life ahead.
This year's release is excellent value for such a high quality and ageworthy wine - it is £330 per six in bond. We have a full range of Egly's latest disgorgements available, shipped directly from the domaine and detailed below.
Les Prémices - which sees no oak - is based around the 2021 vintage and includes 30% 2020 and 20% 2019. This is a brilliant Champagne to drink now, with three years on lees and a brightness of fruit that makes it complex and disarmingly approachable, it showed very well when we tasted it and offers real value for money.
Les Vignes de Vrigny is a premier cru also based on the 2021 vintage with the same 30% 2020 and 20% 2019. The vineyards are entirely planted to Pinot Meunier that is now over 50 years old, lending this a juicy, soft structure that makes it ideal for drinking in youth.
Les Vignes de Bisseuil is a premier cru which focuses on Chardonnay and has a pithy textural depth, chalky and layered thanks to its fermentation and élevage in oak before four years on lees in bottle. This years release is based on 2020 with support from 2019 and 2018, a superb trio of vintages.
Brut Grand Cru is a knockout again this year, also based around 2020 with 30% 2019 and 20% 2018. Another powerful, gastronomic rendition of Egly's flagship wine, this is the one to buy in order to understand the essence of Egly's style. Fermented and matured in oak, it spent four years on the lees before bottling.
Egly's Rosé is always one of the first wines to sell out - this year we expect nothing less as it is based on 2019 with an extra year on lees before disgorgement. Very limited.
V.P. (Vieillisement Prolongée) is a firm staff favourite. Aged for seven years on the lees in bottle, it takes on real density, complexity and refinement in texture. This year the wine is formed from 50% 2017, 30% 2016 and 20% 2015. It oozes class and though drinking well already it is worth holding back in the cellar.
Blanc de Noirs Vieilles Vignes Les Crayères is the collectors' choice that needs little introduction. It is 50/50 2018 and 2017 this year, from vines planted in the 1940s.
2016 Millésime is released for the first time, together with magnums of the 99-point 2012 that were disgorged in 2025 after 12 years on the lees. Both are as rare as they are impressive.
2023 Ambonnay Rouge is not to be overlooked. Egly make their reds to compete with premier and grand cru red Burgundy. This is a serious, barrel-aged wine that needs at least 5 years and preferably 10 in bottle to reach its potential.
